Gateway Metalworks secured a 250-bed private hospital with zone-based fencing and emergency vehicle access control systems. The project balanced patient safety with operational efficiency across a 2.8-hectare campus. We created distinct zones to manage visitor flow and protect sensitive medical areas from unauthorized access. This system ensures critical ambulance access while restricting entry to clinical zones.

THE CHALLENGE
Unauthorized access to restricted areas compromised patient privacy and violated healthcare safety protocols. Emergency vehicle response times were affected by inadequate traffic flow management and parking congestion. The hospital required a solution that looked welcoming while providing effective security infrastructure. Administrators needed to resolve these issues without disrupting the daily flow of patients and visitors.
THE APPROACH
We installed modular steel fencing with emergency breakaway sections that open instantly for critical vehicle access. The design separated public, staff, and emergency-vehicle routes, with automated access control at five entry points. Our engineers prioritized visibility to maintain a safe and open environment for patients and families. This layout optimized traffic flow and secured all critical entry points without creating a fortress appearance.

Phase 1: Mapped traffic flow patterns and emergency vehicle requirements. Installed temporary fencing to maintain operations during construction.
Phase 2: Built 485 meters of modular steel fencing with visibility panels. Created dedicated emergency lanes with automatic barrier systems.
Phase 3: Integrated access cards for staff zones and visitor management systems. Added directional signage and landscaping buffers.

Security Impact: Unauthorized access to restricted areas eliminated. Patient safety incidents reduced by 78%.
Cost Savings: Streamlined parking reduced security staffing by 2 positions, saving R240,000 annually. Emergency response improved by 3.5 minutes on average.
Community Benefit: Patient satisfaction scores improved by 18%. Enhanced neighborhood safety with defined campus boundaries.
Compliance: Met Department of Health security standards and OHSC accreditation requirements.
